Mom and Baby Great Horned Owl

If you look closely you can see the eye of the baby owl.  It (all fluff) is facing in towards its mother.  Almost hiding under her protective wing.  To see it better, click on the photograph. This was taken this morning at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge.

Red Tailed Hawk and Empty Grass (Click Hawk for Better View)

I was watching this hawk as he swooped down right in front of me to catch a little mouse in the grass.  He got bothered by my clicking of the camera and so grabbed the grass where he thought the mouse was hiding and flew right past me.  I watched him fly away and realize he had no mouse and so dropped all the grass a few seconds later.

We Made it Home and are Still ALIVE!!

Got home from our road trip to Sanibel Island yesterday afternoon and must say we had one heck of a wonderful time, even if I did try to kill Ken on I 95 North because he was overriding the GPS system as I was driving.

Sanibel was magnificent.  We swam every day. It was the first time Ken got in a pool in eight years.  He didn't think he could swim with the Parkinson's, but he got in the shallow end and took to the water like a duck and did a few laps.  Oh - what joy.  Here's Yumiko with new friend Buster.  Buster is the most wonderful dog of our friends Larry and Sharon Cox (next picture) where we stopped for a tasty brunch at their house in Marietta, Georgia on the way down to Florida.

Yellow Crowned Night Heron and Snack

We are here in Sanibel Island, Florida.  We drove four days straight with a few stops in-between and made it here Monday.  All is well.  Ken and Yumiko are so happy to be out of the car.  And did I mention the birds!!

We're On Our Way to Florida!!!

Ken, Yumiko and I are driving to Sanibel Island today for a little Spring Break.  Hopefully we will get there in one piece.  I am taking the camera and computer, so I'll post a few pictures.  In the mean time, here are are a few more photographs of the eviction of the starling by the red bellied woodpecker from start to finish.  (Click on the picture for better viewing.)

Get Out of My House NOW!!!

I was watching the Red Bellied Woodpecker building his nest in the tree in Valley Forge when the starling snuck by him and hid in the hole.  The woodpecker pecked away at the starling who would not budge - although there were lots of feathers flying.  Finally the woodpecker got a hold of the starling's foot and pulled him out without getting his own eye pecked.  (Click photo for much better view.)
